Definition of Ethnic Minority Dealer(s)

The National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) defines an ethnic minority deal as the awarding of a franchise agreement to an ethnic minority, as recognized by NAMAD, which allows the ethnic minority dealer to sell that manufacturer's new car products to the general public. The dealership must be more than fifty percent owned by an ethnic minority, or must provide a contractual right to buy up to a majority interest within a reasonable amount of time (typically five to seven years). The ethnic minority interest must be owned by a United States citizen or naturalized resident. In order to be included in a manufacturer's count of current ethnic minority deals, the dealer must have a dealer code and be open to conduct business with the general public and the dealership must be located within the 50 states of the United States.

American Indian or Alaska Native

• A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment.

Black or African American

• A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. This definition includes:
  • Native-born Black Americans
  • Africans
  • Haitians
  • Residents of non-Spanish speaking Caribbean Islands of African descent
    
    
• The terms Black and African American are both used to refer to individuals from this background.

Hispanic Or Latino

• A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.
  
  
• Hispanic or Latino refers to people born in North, Central, and South America, and in the Caribbean whose language is Spanish. This definition excludes people born in Europe whose language is Spanish or Portuguese, and non-Spanish speaking people born in Brazil, Belize, French Guyana, Guyana (former British Guyana), and Surinam (former Dutch Guyana) and other non-Spanish speaking territories.

Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander

• A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Hawaiian Islands or the Pacific Islands.
  
  
• Native Hawaiian refers to a person having origins in any of the peoples of the Hawaiian Islands. Pacific Islander refers to a person having origins in any of the peoples of the Pacific Islands. The term includes:
  • Guamanians
  • Samoans
  • Fijians

  • Tahitians
  • Marshallese
  • Melanesians
  • Other Pacific Islanders
  • Native Hawaiians
